gone down: Once. On Sixth Avenue west of Broadway, I didn’t see a
manhole cover—perhaps because it was about 14 feet below
the asphalt. The hole between the street and the manhole
cover grabbed and twisted my front wheel, and my scoot and I
were soon parallel to the street.
Scooters Owned: 2009 dark green People 50 (Scootie)
Scooter Story: While in high school and college in Northwest Nebraska,
I rode a Honda Trail 90 motorcycle with a scooter-like
step-through design and an under-seat gas tank—a bike
that I now think of as a Redneck Vespa! Although I have
thought occasionally about going back to two wheels, a look
at some People 50s at Sportique’s booth at Pridefest 2008
clinched it. I bought Scootie soon afterward and have since
gained the reputation of being a certified (and certifiable)
scooter nerd.
